Administering Medication via Metered Dose Inhaler (MDI)

7351 STUDENTS ENROLLED

A metered dose inhaler (MDI) is a handheld device that is a convenient mode for delivering accurate doses of medication to a person’s lungs. Used correctly there is very little wastage and limited likelihood of experiencing adverse side effects.

An MDI consists of a pressurised canister inside a plastic mouthpiece. A chemical propellant is used to administer medication as a directed, fine mist into the client’s air passages. The method still requires that the client inhale the medication correctly to ensure effective delivery to the lungs (Joanna Briggs Institute 2015).
