Administer Oral Medication – Sublingual Tablets

7446 STUDENTS ENROLLED

Sublingual medications are administered via the mucous membranes under the tongue, where they dissolve and the active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) are absorbed into the bloodstream.  Sublingual administration allows for systemic drug delivery with immediate onset of action. The fast rate of absorption is due to the reticulated veins in the oral mucosa. This is important during an emergency when a drug must act immediately. The sublingual route is also used for clients with:

  • Dysphagia
  • Nausea
