Performing Hand Hygiene – Aseptic Clinical Procedure Hand Wash

5814 STUDENTS ENROLLED

Hand hygiene is the single most effective intervention to reduce the risk of healthcare associated infections (HCAI). Indications for hand hygiene using antimicrobial solutions focus on situations where healthcare workers are in contact with clients who:

  • are immunocompromised or
  • have damaged skin and mucous membranes or
  • are undergoing invasive procedures such as the insertion of an indwelling urinary catheter (IDUC).

There are a number of effective antimicrobial solutions, including chlorhexidine gluconate 2%. It is important to note that some healthcare workers are prone to skin irritation from some antimicrobial solutions. If skin irritation occurs, seek the guidance of an infection control consultant.
