Priming and Connecting an Intravenous (IV) Line

6246 STUDENTS ENROLLED

Priming and connecting an IV line is the process undertaken to prepare sterile fluids for infusion into the circulatory system in a closed, air-free, uncontaminated manner, through an intravenous cannula as prescribed. Assessment for signs of phlebitis, extravasation, infection and pain before, during and after intravenous administration is vital to ensure the patency and viability of the vein. Ongoing client assessment of hydration, cardiovascular and renal function is required in response to fluid administration in a similar way to the evaluation of medication administration.

All usual considerations around safe medication administration including the correct calculation of infusion rate apply and additional efforts to prevent infection through the application of aseptic non-touch technique (ANTT) in the preparation and administration of the fluid infusions are required.

The process requires that each bag of fluid be checked by two (2) staff and signed as per organisational policy.
