Administration of Eye Ointment
Eye ointments are an effective treatment against many eye conditions such as eye dryness, itching, infection and inflammation. Treatment maybe long or short term.
To ensure against transferring the infection to the ointment tube nozzle it is important not to let the nozzle touch the eye, eyelashes or eyelid. As the eye is a sensitive part of the body, ensure that only the prescribed amount of medication is used.
The use of gloves for this procedure will depend on the reason for administering the medication. However, gloves are recommended if there is a potential for contact with bodily secretions.
Use caution when administering eye ointment as use can result in adverse systemic effects and allergic reactions (The Joanna Briggs Institute, 2016).
