Measurement of temperature

Temperature readings are performed as part of the skill set, vital signs, and can be described as the balance between the heat produced and the heat lost by the body.

Maintenance of correct range of body temperature is essential for proper functioning of body cells so an understanding of the normal range (36 – 37.5c) forms part of the underpinning knowledge of a nurse.

If a temperature reading is outside normal range, use of critical thinking skills and nursing action is required, such as reporting to the registered nurse.
